Suzhou is in the midst of a nice mild break in the weather, so my days at home with the animals have been quite pleasant and layers worn haven't been quite as thick. We're due to dip back down, though, so don't get too harumph-y about my bragging.
I don't think I ever mentioned it, but poor Miles escaped my parents' house while he was staying with them, tore greyhound-speed circles around on wet, muddy grass, and tore a ligament in his back right knee, followed, of course, by surgery. In October. And he's still kind of gimpy (no shock, it's a long healing time). So, a lot of the reason I'm so very glad to have this extensive time home (especially with nice weather) is so I can take him on multiple slow walks each day, in hopes that the muscle mass lost in resting and healing can be slowly rebuilt and get his little ligament stretched out so it doesn't hurt as much. I'm not totally sure it's working yet, there's lots of evenings where he's hobbling around on only three legs, but we're trying. And since it's the week of celebration for Chinese New Year, almost everyone who is from elsewhere in the country has departed and gone to spend time with family, so it's much more devoid of crazy Chinese neighbors who panic everytime they round the corner on the weaving walking paths to see me and my big bad beagle sniffing the ground and minding his own business. Seriously, one 14 year old girl screamed, "DOG!" and ran away from us. Miles was literally 3 feet off the sidewalk, sniffing a discarded skewer from someone's cart food snack.
But, on the flip side, a 5 year old boy was playing some sort of chase or hide and seek game with his dad one evening and was really enamored with this weird looking critter (most "China Dogs" as my sister called them look like this or this. Perfectly cute, but nothing I'd want to love on). Miles could tell this kid was into him and sat down like a gentleman and I told the kid he could come over. He touched the silky ears, patted his head, and squatted down to look Miles in the eye. He then popped up, yelled he wanted to tell his dad, and came running back to show off his new buddy.
Melt me right into a puddle.

Isn't it fun when life gets busy and fun and you get super blasé about documenting anything for your blog?
And when you return you have this junker outfit that you managed to capture? Nothing actually fashionable, or creative, or interesting.
Whatever.
We've been occupied, and I like it. Hop over here for a quick rundown of what we've been doing.
And a quick story: it's National Holiday, which means almost everything of significance is closed. Like President's Day or something. Except it goes on for 7. whole. bleeping. days. Which should be awesome, except it means everyone either travels, clogging airlines and trains, or plays tourist in town. We thought we'd do the cool thing and do more exploring our new city and wound up in a sardine-like nightmare bus getting out to Tiger Hill. I don't know if you guys saw it on Instagram a while back (@katebmcclure and @robertwmcclure) that we started a hashtag #tallguyinchina. Rob is so out of place in so many situations, standing literally heads above the rest of the population, but a packed bus is a special form of torture. His rear end usually ends up right in line with someone's oversized backpack, or his head gets mangled in the plastic hold-loops in the standing room area. I love the idea of public transit, but, sometimes you just gotta buck up and pay way too much for the bodily comfort of a speedy, just-the-two-of-us cab ride back across town.
We will not be going anyplace interesting for the rest of the week. We'll try again during a normal weekend.
Hope you guys are well! Any absurd stories?

Friends, it's starting. Our apartment looks like a bad horror movie set. Dust bunnies, derelict and strewn boxes, a tragic lack of furniture. I'm also rotating between about 7 total articles of clothing and wearing them like mad. So, I'm rationing photos from outfits past. For example, that skirt was last worn about three weeks ago and found a new home with my sister. And that gingham blouse got packed away in the "to be shipped box." Instead, I'm wearing all of the t-shirts that look like they won't last the summer anyway. If I look a liiiittle bit silly for my last three weeks of work, what are they going to do? Fire me?
The other little bit of weirdness is packing what needs to get shipped on the slow boat since that will need to get picked up within about a week or two to get to China in time for the start of the school year. And academic books for instruction are kiiiind of important for a new teacher and a new program.
Happiest Wednesday, dear ones!

A big, hearty welcome to my first full week of my new job. And, yes, I know I have some 'splainin' to do.
I am now the Grants and Special Projects Manager for Young Audiences of Houston. If it has anything to do with getting the arts into education, they've got their hands in it. Want to make partnerships between schools, hospitals, community centers and the major performance groups and individual artists? Got that covered, too. It's a really cool funnel-type organization that channels arts-based opportunities for personal growth and learning for kids and their educators, which is a really cool thing. And I'm going to help with the funding side of the operation. Which is a little new and terrifying to me, but I can't wait to be a part of it all! (Especially since, in order to write grants well and geared to the right projects and foundations, I'll need to have a solid understanding of kids' needs and the programs we offer... which means I get to hang out in a few classrooms to wrap my head around it!)
Happy new week, you all! It's going to be a good one.

Um, yes. This inspiration was awesome, the chance to remind myself about this pleated skirt was awesome, gingham is awesome. Erica, Kayla and Grace- good call on sending one out to the masses!
Today is a big day, sort of. My Guy applied to a music teaching job in China and I'm responsible today for sending them physical copies of a DVD of his music and a DVD video of his site-specific performance. A sample curriculum and other qualifying documents will be emailed to the selection committee by the end of the month, they'll review materials from everyone and decide who goes from Round 2 to Round 3 (Interviews!). We're not holding our breath for anything, my husband isn't even through his comprehensive exams yet. Exam completion would classify him as ABD (all but dissertation) and most hiring universities won't follow through with anyone without their degree in hand, but it's an excellent learning process to go through the steps of preparing for a selection committee.
But, not bleeping up getting the materials mailed and slated to arrive on time is a big responsibility. Especially international mailing. Think good thoughts for me around 1:00 p.m.- I'll be in line at the post office getting ready to mail. Eep!
Art Car Weekend
Thursday, May 10, 2012
It's going to be an errand day- and I'm excited. Lots of packets and tickets to be delivered, long car rides around town, intermittent phone calls about a task or item forgotten. It's a strangely satisfying puzzle to get it all done efficiently and with the most pleasant route for a ride with the windows down.
And it's all happening because it's NEARLY ART CAR WEEKEND. This amazing Houston tradition is in it's 25th year and is so wonderfully nuts. The excitement and joy of the Art Car community and sense of fun and whimsy are not to be missed if you're ever in Houston during the second weekend in May. To read more about the history of the Parade or to see some of the cars, check out the website! Tonight, my guy and I are going to the Art Car Ball, which is the preview party in celebration of the artists and maaaany of them come in costume to match their cars, other guests just come in costume for fun. It's loud, wild, goofy and totally fun.
What kind of events go on in your town? Any awesome festivals? Strange parades?

I'll give you two guesses to figure out my new favorite pair of shoes. (Hint- you'll only need one guess)
Happy Friday! I'm glad to be ending another work week!
PS- We get to join Bromance and Jersey Girl in San Antonio for this weekend. I am way beyond excited about it. So is dog. He's so good about road trips.

Being Green
Tuesday, March 13, 2012
I realized St. Patty's is coming up this weekend and, while I don't care much one way or the other, it's Bromance's very favorite day of the year and he will complete his second Doctoral recital tonight (WOOOHOO!). In honor of his affinity for the "holiday" and in celebration of his getting through the daunting degree requirement, I will spend the rest of the week in green. Not that he reads this mess of a blog, so he won't care one way or the other about my little tribute, but it's fun to have a little bit of direction and a theme. And I bought him some shamrock twisty straws for the weekend, so that's fun, too.

Give Gingham Some Love
Friday, February 10, 2012
Well, the necklace was an unshapely mistake. Live and learn.
But, how easy and wonderful and always nice-looking is a blue gingham shirt? I found this one at the Banana Outlet toward the end of last summer and thought I would like it, but could I really justify the price at ooooooonly 35% off? This gamble was well worth it- it's long enough, trim enough, has interesting and well made buttons. You all haven't seen it on the blog often mostly because I mindfully leave it in the closet for at least 4 out of 5 outfits I think up to use it. Meaning I only actually wear it 1/5 of the time I think about it. Because I don't want to launder it to death.
I've been drooling over the recent posts of beautiful petite bloggers who are strutting their gorgeous stuff in little boys' gingham. La Vie Petite, Extra Petite, Alterations Needed... and that's just what I found in a few seconds. Perhaps Gap Kids calls my name this weekend...
Comment with a link of your latest Gingham escapades so I can drool on you a little, too! (Doooo it- you know you wanna to help me celebrate 150 posts chock full of nonsense!)

Winter Brights
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
I feel like a crayon.
When Kayla gave the prompt to wear Brights for the Winter Challenge, I ran with it. Strangely, even with all the color, my least favorite part of this outfit is the shamrock green cardi. I think if I'd worn my emerald goodie from Target I would have been happier. The color of this one is bold, yes, but the cut of the sweater itself is a little boxier. Which I don't love. I'll tuck it aside to wear on St. Patty's (it's Bromance's very favorite holiday, so braving the sloshy bar scene for his benefit is something I'll happily do in a boxy perfectly colored cardigan I'm not in like with).
Please please please play along with the Winter Challenge this week- it's wonderfully theraputic and is stretching my style sense in some really great ways. (And getting involved will introduce you to some really lovely and charming bloggers! Making connections is the best part about this whole blogging experience, huh?)

Wild Mixing and Matching
Friday, January 27, 2012
There's a lot going on in this outfit. I started pattern mixing this buttondown with some other sweater options, but I kept coming back to the wonderful weirdness with the floral cardigan. And then realized I had a striped shirt with the same mushroom and white tones. Eh, why not jumble them all together? Fun and just a liiiiittle over the top.
Isn't it funny how many more wild and awesome pattern mixing options you can come up with when you're given a prompt to really think about it in a new and different way? Challenges are so good for getting your creative juices flowing! I've been singing the blues about missing my neutrals all week as a result of forcing myself out of my comfort zone, but I'm pretty sure this look satiates both my need for quiet non-colors and another jump outside of my box.

Layered Blouses
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
For the first time in a good long while, my guy said "Hey, you look really nice today." I'll take it. More often than not, we compliment the dog on being cute before we compliment each other. Oops.
I can't tell you all how excited I am to be taking part in the Winter Edition Challenge hosted by Kayla at Freckles in April. She's such a positive, cheerful, encouraging blogger and the massive undertaking that was the 21 Day Challenge back in the fall was my intro to the blogging community. I'm so grateful that so many new friends were in those links and she allowed it to be so easy to find them! Check it out, think about joining us and have some fun!

Stuck on You
Thursday, January 19, 2012
I glued my hand to a mug yesterday. It was, indeed, every bit as idiotic as it sounds. I repaired an old ceramic beauty that was cracked all to hell to be used as a pencil cup and the seams were a little tricky. So I used some of that creepy craft-store super powered stinky glue, applied only a little bit too much (with the knowledge that I could actone the extra off the surface) and clamped it between my index finger and thumb. It held beautifully. The tricky part was when I lifted my hand away to discover that a bead of glue dropped onto the final chunk of mug that still needed to be done (and I braced my hand on the desk/chunk to glue the initial two together). The chunk was firmly stuck to the heel of my palm. Oops.

The definition of insanity
Wednesday, December 14, 2011
Well, we all know the saying... But, for kicks, let's try flared pants one more time. I'm still not sold. I know a wedge heel would help, but something about the overall effect is still a little bit "only okay" for my taste. BTW, does this combo on top look a little familiar? Oopsies. I washed 'em, I washed 'em.
That's all I've got today, ladies. I'll do better tomorrow.

Riiiiiiiiggs.
Monday, December 12, 2011
This weekend has been a blasty-blast. We spent Friday evening with Bromance and his lovely lady before they head off and away for the holidays (we ate our body weight in cheap Mexican food and then double that in frozen yogurt). Saturday was spent thrifting while my Guy worked on projects, then laundry and Lethal Weapon-fest (and a 2-man drinking game. Spiked hot-chocolate makes laundry and Mel more enjoyable every time). And today, the coup-de-grâce, we spent at Kemah Boardwalk eating shrimp, people watching and enjoying a sunny day on the Gulf. For fun. Why not? We rode a roller coaster and everything!
I have been so excited for a reason to wear this sweater- it's thick and awesome and makes me feel almost as cute as Loren.
I loooove weekends like this- we both did our fair share of work and house-tidying, but we spent real time together and are feeling really truly rested and ready for next week. Ahhhhhh, two weeks before Christmas and our trip back to Ohio- I'm off to start packin'! (Do you ever save clothes waaaaay in advance of a trip so that you for sure have it clean and so it feels "special" when you do wear it? Only me? Oh, okay.)
We're off to finish out the Lethal Weapon series. See you all manana!

My roller-coaster hair. My Guy tried to help tame it and got his whole HAND stuck in there. |
